John Greenway has been Member of Parliament for Ryedale in North Yorkshire since 1987.
Before entering Parliament, John served as a London policeman from 1965 to 1970. On leaving the police he entered the insurance industry and in 1972 started his own firm of insurance brokers which is now part of the Smart and Cook Group.
At Westminster, John is Chairman of the All Party Insurance & Financial Services Group and joint Chairman of All Party Racing & Bloodstock Committee, Vice-Chairman of the All Party Football Committee and Chairman of the All Party Opera Group.
In June 1997 John became Opposition Front Bench Spokesman for Home Affairs, and in February 2000 he was appointed the position of Opposition Front Bench Spokesman for Culture Media and Sport, with particular responsibility for sport and tourism, a post which he resigned in 2003 to chair a Scrutiny Committee from both Houses to consider the draft Gambling Bill.
In 2006 John became Chairman of the Responsibility in Gambling Trust, and in 2009 became the charity’s President.
